Chery is taking an unusual approach ahead of the launch of its first Australian ute, asking the public to help decide what it should be called.
After recently revealing plans for the model, Chinese-based vehicle brand Chery has launched a nationwide competition inviting Australians to submit name ideas for the upcoming vehicle — with the winner set to receive the first example delivered in the country.

New drivetrain
The new ute, expected to arrive later this year, is notable for what Chery says will be a world-first drivetrain: a plug-in hybrid diesel setup. The combination aims to deliver the towing and payload capability typical of diesel utes while introducing electrified efficiency.
According to the company, the model is targeting a 1000kg payload and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, figures that place it firmly within the expectations of the Australian ute market.
Before the official launch, however, Chery is giving the public the chance to help shape the vehicle’s identity.

Australians can submit their suggested name through the Chery Australia website, along with a short explanation of why the name suits the new ute. Submissions will first be reviewed by the company, with a shortlist then put to a public vote before a final decision is made.

The person who submits the winning name will receive a new Chery ute when the model arrives in Australia.
The competition — titled the “Great Australian Chery Ute Naming Competition” — opened at 12:00pm AEDT on Thursday 12 March 2026 and will close at 11:50pm AEDT on Thursday 26 March 2026.
