V8 Supercars: Spotlight on Jake Kostecki

Jake Kostecki

The 22 year old driver competed at this year’s Townsville 500 in his Ford Mustang. Jake Kostecki is a Tradie Underwear Sponsor.

How’d you get into racing Supercars?

I got into motorsport at a pretty young age, I started go karting when I was 7 with my brother and cousin. My dad built engines for most of the Supercars teams back in the day, so we really grew up in the paddock and at the races. We started racing locally in WA, then state and national levels and even did some karting overseas. When I was 15, I started in the Supercars feeder series in Super3 and then Super2, and I made my Supercars debut at the Bathurst 1000 in 2019.

Tell us about the car you’re driving at Townsville…

The Tradie Mustang is powered by a 5-litre V8 engine built and developed by Tickford Racing, we start with an engine block and headers from Ford, and virtually everything else on top is designed by our engineers.

What’s the highest speed you’ve clocked?

We get up to 300kph down Conrod Straight at Bathurst. If you’re in the draft from a car in front and have a good tailwind you might creep over that, but 300’s about the fastest we can go.

Can you tell us about any toys you own that you like to get adventurous with in your spare time?

I’m more of a water sports guy, so I love getting out on the jet ski or going fishing whenever I have the chance.

Do you have a favourite car in your personal collection, or one you’d love to own?

I had my own 2017 Mustang I recently sold, I did a bit of work on it which was pretty fun. Dad’s got an XY GT Falcon which is pretty cool too, I love taking that out when I visit home.

Needless to say, it’s great to welcome sports events back after Covid. What can fans expect from the upcoming Supercars Townsville race?

Townsville’s a really fun event. The fans up there are really passionate about racing and just love cars, so it’s always a cool atmosphere. It’s a tricky track that puts on great racing, and it’s in the middle of the season for us so everyone’s on top of their game and racing hard. We’ve done doubleheaders the last two years in Townsville, so they’ve been somewhat lucky to have so much racing, but from an event perspective it was toned down a bit because of COVID restrictions, so it’ll be awesome to have the full event back with all the racing, concerts, and crowds back. I can’t wait to get back up there.
