Tradies to get $10k under Albanese in election splash

The Albanese Government has announced that if re-elected, certain tradies will pocket a nifty $10,000.

The Key Apprentice Program will see carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, electricians and joiners benefit from the cash splash.

The program is aimed at retaining apprentices, while also firming up a pipeline of tradies to tackle the housing shortage.

“Because we recognise the next generation of tradies, the people we’re counting on to build the new homes we need, are under significant financial pressure,” Anthony Albanese told the National Press Club.

“Right now, a first-year carpentry apprentice earns about two-thirds of the minimum wage. Some apprentices earn even less.”

The Prime Minister added that many apprentices are leaving their studies, and one major factor is the cost.

“As a number of apprentices have said, they could earn a lot more stacking shelves in their local supermarket,” he added.

“Too many leave training, because they can’t afford to stay.”

How will it work?

Under the program, apprentices would receive five increments of $2000 on top of their wages. The first payment would come after the first six months of the apprenticeship, and the last one would come upon completion.

More information is expected to come.
