Tradie Tough Test: Cement Australia’s Low Carbon Cement

Low Carbon Cement

A GP Cement equivalent that’s good for the environment? Cement Australia struts its innovation with the new Low Carbon Cement.

More and more tradies are looking at ways to lessen their environmental footprint.

Whether it’s their materials or tools; companies are trying to keep up with the sustainable demands of their tradie customers.

Gone are the days, however, where tradies would need to sacrifice quality for sustainability. Cement Australia proves that by delivering a Low Carbon Cement that’s as good for certain jobs as it is for the environment.

Just how good is this Low Carbon Cement? We grabbed a few bags and hit up bricky Ryan Whipps from Whips Bricks. He was using the Low Carbon Cement for walls at a residential build at Knox to Melbourne’s east.

Test #1: Sustainable setter

Environmentally-minded tradies such as Ryan will love this cement. It’s made with 30 per cent less embodied carbon than Cement Australia’s General Purpose (GP) Cement.

“It’s great to know we’re using a product that’s better for the environment,” Ryan added.

We’ll put this into perspective – if tradies only used Low carbon Cement, it would be the equivalent to saving the same amount of carbon stored in a forest the size of Melbourne.

The Low Carbon Cement is an Aussie first in a lot of ways, including being the first product of its type to be on the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) register.

The EPD Australasia register hosts verified documents from brands across Australia that provide data on the lifecycle environmental impact of a product.

Test #2: Smooth mover

Cement Australia is able to offer a Low Carbon Cement option through the use of its newly developed GreenCem™ Technology.

This formula uses fly ash and other supplementary cementitious material in the mixture.

Traditionally, fly ash has reduced early setting strength, however Cement Australia’s GreenCem™ avoids that.

Thanks to GreenCem™, the Low Carbon Cement has an early setting strength comparable to GP Cement.

“We’ll be using the Low Carbon Cement for most of our projects we’d be using GP Cement for,” Ryan said.

“We’ve been using it for bricks and blocks as well as core filling – it’s been awesome for everything we’ve needed it for.”

Depending on the mixture, Low Carbon Cement can improve the workability and pumpability while maintaining the same durability requirements as seen in GP cement.

Forward thinking

Ryan’s been a loyal Cement Australia customer for as long as he can remember. The Low Carbon Cement is the latest (sustainable) chapter in the relationship.

“The mortar is just as smooth and consistent as the other Cement Australia products we use,” Ryan said.

“You’re making a difference to the environment, without making a difference to the quality of your work.”

When you stack up the environmental benefits and the enhanced performance with GreenCem™, there’s tonnes of reasons for tradies to consider the Low Carbon Cement
