Here’s what a typical tradie’s business insurance checklist might look like:
Public Liability to get on site? Check. Covered your tools with Portable Equipment? Check. Maybe even Personal Accident & Illness for injuries that leave you unable to work? Check.
These types of insurance are a solid start for many tradies, but there might be other risks that these insurances just don’t cover. Here are three overlooked insurances that you might want to consider:
Professional Indemnity
Professional Indemnity is a must-have for some tradies. For example, in NT, QLD, VIC, and WA it’s required for specific building occupations to become licensed. And beginning in July 2026, registered building practitioners in NSW will also join this list.
But even if it’s not required for your trade, Professional Indemnity could provide important protection for you and your business.

It covers third-party claims and defence costs due to alleged or actual negligence in your professional services or advice. This may include common risks, like failing to complete work by an agreed date, not obtaining necessary permits or approvals, or if a client thinks you didn’t exercise reasonable care while providing your services.
Theft
Your tools might already be insured, but you may want to check your policy wording. They might not be covered if they’re stolen from your tool shed, garage, or ute.
Portable Equipment (an optional part of a Business Insurance Package) covers you if your tools go missing on a worksite, but not anywhere else. However, Theft insurance (another Package option) covers you against loss and damage as a result of theft or attempted theft from your business premises. Damage to the building, locks and safes as a result of a covered event will also be covered.
Theft helps cover a gap left by Portable Equipment insurance, so your tools and equipment are protected both on and off the job.
Cyber Liability
A lot of tradies run their businesses on the go—texting clients from worksites, sending invoices on a smoko, or reconciling payments at the local pub. But, these and other everyday activities can be cyber weak points that put you at risk.
Cyber Liability insurance covers losses from claims arising from data breaches, business interruption and remediation costs following an actual or threatened data breach. These policies also give tradies access to 24/7 IT support following a cyberattack or data breach to help minimise the damage and get back to business faster.
