The Top 10 household emergencies tradies are called in for

Tradies are often in high demand, but stats have found it’s plumbers who get the most calls when it comes to household emergencies.

The RACV has revealed the numbers behind home maintenance emergencies that lead to a spike in callouts.

Perhaps unsurprisingly blocked pipes or toilets led the survey, with a staggering 9,398 callouts, representing 18 percent of all emergency requests.

This is followed by burst pipes being the second most common issue, but at a lower 6,694 callouts.

However other tradies than plumbers do get a look-in in emergencies with electricians and other technicians also ranked in high demand with power failures (6,562) and broken heating or cooling systems (5,812).

Burst taps and showerheads (5,718), broken hot water systems (5,542), internal leaks (5,295) were also listed along with lockouts (4,375), broken garage doors (1,240), and gas leaks, which is significantly less frequent at 859 callouts.

RACV Head of Trades Kieran Davies said having swift emergency responses can help address unexpected situations promptly, minimising damage and ensuring safety.

With the number of callouts, Davies urged homeowners to acquaint themselves with preventative measures for common household issues, before calling Emergency Home Assist.

The Victorian home insurer also has some practical advice that may prevent the most common of callouts and prevent blocked pipes and toilets.

“Never flush paper towels, wet wipes, tampons or menstrual products, nappies, dishcloths or sponges, ear cleaners or cotton pads, dental floss or hair,” Davies said.
