Apprentice Electrician, Tom Harms is in his third year of his apprenticeship doing work he’s “really passionate about”.
That’s why he found it such an honour to represent his trade at WorldSkills at both Regional and National levels.
He excelled in both spheres, taking Gold Medals at both competitions.
“I’ve learnt a lot from competing so far, like using different materials and techniques to what we use at work,” Tom said.
“I’ve also had the chance to make lots of good friends.”

He’s fond of a challenge and the competition threw a few his way, specifically those to do with organisation.
“I’ve learnt to write down my schedules now,” he laughed.

Strong support
Tom is greatly indebted to his employer, Marathon Electrical, for the support they’ve shown him both during the competitions and on the job.
“My coworker Liam taught me most of what I know about the electrical trade, while giving me freedom to learn. I’ve discovered working with good people is the most rewarding part of my job.”
Future hopes
Tom looks forward to expanding himself as an Electrician and specialising within the industry.
Most importantly, he said he wants “to work on projects that will better people’s lives.”
