Proper supervision is critical to ensuring safe, high-quality plumbing work and the protection of workers and the public.
The Master Plumbers Association (MPA) of NSW welcomes the NSW Government’s renewed focus on supervision standards in the plumbing industry.
The MPA of NSW also welcomes the Intervention of the Building Commission NSW to enforce compliance.
The MPA NSW has long advocated for improved oversight and fully supports the government’s push to hold non-compliant businesses accountable.
“Stronger supervision standards are not only a positive step for our industry but also a vital measure to safeguard the health and safety of our community,” CEO of MPA NSW, Nathaniel Smith said.
“We are committed to ensuring that our apprentices receive the guidance and training they need to succeed.”
Through Master Plumbers Apprentices Limited (MPAL) Group Training Organisation (GTO), the MPA NSW employ apprentices and place them with host trainers while providing field officers to ensure adequate supervision, compliance with SafeWork NSW standards, and a supportive learning environment.
Industry data consistently shows that apprentices placed through a GTO have an 80 per cent completion rate, compared to just 50 per cent for those directly employed. This proves that structured supervision & pastoral care significantly improves both safety and skill development.
“The statistics speak volumes. Investing in proper training and supervision not only enhances the competency of our future tradies but also reinforces the integrity of our industry as a whole,” Smith said.
MPA NSW does not tolerate any employer who cuts corners, fails to provide proper supervision, or places apprentices in dangerous situations.
According to MPA NSW, young apprentices lack the experience to navigate complex plumbing tasks alone, and poor supervision jeopardises their safety and risks non-compliant work that can have serious consequences for public health.
“We commend the Building Commission NSW for its targeted compliance activities and awareness campaign, as well as its partnership with TAFE NSW in developing new regulatory training,” Smith said.
“These measures will reinforce the importance of supervision and ensure that all plumbing professionals meet the required standards.”
MPA NSW urges all licensed plumbers and businesses to take this opportunity to review their supervision practices, invest in proper training, and uphold the high standards that protect our industry and the wider community.
