A workplace incident in Victoria has put a sharp spotlight on the importance of proper safety procedures, after a worker suffered a significant fall while carrying out tree cutting work.
The 28-year-old was standing on an A-frame ladder using a chainsaw when he fell 4m to the ground in March 2024 — an incident that highlights the risks associated with working at height without adequate safeguards.
Alleged failures in safety measures
According to WorkSafe Victoria, IntraAust Properties Pty Ltd now faces multiple charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

It is alleged the company failed to provide a working environment that was safe and without risks to health — a core obligation under workplace safety laws.
Among the specific claims are failures to engage a qualified arborist or tree removal specialist, and to provide safer alternatives to working from a ladder, such as a temporary work platform or appropriate cutting equipment.
Managing risks at height
WorkSafe also alleges the risks associated with a fall were not adequately controlled, including the absence of passive fall prevention measures.
Additionally, the company is accused of failing to prepare a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) — a critical document designed to identify hazards and outline how high-risk work will be carried out safely.
