Drilling holes of substantial diameter is key for door hardware, running cables, and conduit and pipe work through timber frames. That makes the trusty spade bit an essential item for many trades.
Kango offers a range of spade bits with features which produce high-quality work even the most detail-driven tradie will appreciate. The wingless tip design does a great job ensuring less grabbing while the bit bores through timber and provides a more efficient cutting action. Across the range the bits feature a 12mm scoop designed to remove larger wood chips and maximise cutting speeds, and the bit-head includes multiple grind edges for improved chip removal. Last in an impressive list of features is the 1⁄4″ hex shank, which makes the Kangos suitable for use with both drills and impact drivers.
Available in sizes from 12mm to 38mm, there’s a bit for a wide range of applications. I caught up with carpenter Pat Jacobs to put the spade bits to work on a job site.
Test #1: Quality of holes
The days of spade bits leaving rough and average-looking holes seem to be a thing of the past. As you can see from the images here, our test holes were clean and very tidy across a range of sizes.
“My first impression on the spade bits was they felt strong and well-built,” chipped in Pat. “The wingless tips are a great feature that performed exceptionally well and allowed the bits to freely and cleanly carve out the timber without catching on the edges.
“The 12mm scoop did a great job at clearing out larger wood chips which were flying as the sharp blade did its work.”
Test #2: Speed
The bit not catching allows the 12mm scoop to do its work. At the same time, the Multi Grind Edge produces effortless cuts at speed.
“We had a perfect wall frame,” drilled Pat, “a mix of traditional pine and LVL. We tested the full range of sizes, and the results were consistently excellent, with fast drilling and clean, crisp edges.
“The hex shank makes these bits extremely versatile for both drills and impact drivers, and gives a tight and secure fit in traditional drills, reducing slipping in the chuck. The rate of chip removal was excellent, with a speedy drilling process across the range of sizes.
“I would definitely recommend these bits to all tradies,” said Pat, speaking plane.
The good, the bad, and the ugly
Kango Spade Bits look as good as they perform. They are fast, efficient and easily rip the wood chips out, leaving clean and tidy boreholes. The key features work seamlessly together to produce a top-quality product.
