Tradie Business

Insurance 101: Proving you own your tools

What’s a tradie without their tools?

Getting your job done efficiently, professionally, and safely often depends on what’s in your toolbox. That’s why many tradies add Portable Equipment insurance* to their Business Insurance Pack.

It covers loss and damage to your tools and stock due to theft, fire and other perils listed in the wording.
But when it’s time to make a claim, your insurer will want some proof of ownership before they cut a cheque.
A receipt for each tool or piece of equipment is ideal, but you might not have saved every purchase invoice over the years. What then?

Luckily, insurers will generally accept other forms of evidence to prove that you own your tools. These might include:

  • Hard copy owner’s or operating manuals
  • Original packaging
  • Valuations
  • Photographs

Going forward, it might pay to keep tool and equipment receipts in a safe place should you ever need to make a claim. Snapping a photo of each invoice and the tool it matches might also be a good idea—just in case!
