Queensland Employment and Training Minister Ros Bates said it was fitting that this year’s competition would be the largest in its 44-year history.

“Queensland is a proud skills powerhouse, home to some of the best and brightest students, apprentices and trainees in the nation,” she added.

“We know that with the right skills, a world of opportunity awaits and that’s why we’re investing in a stronger, more skilled future.”

Day 1

Thursday will see apprentices/trainees compete in industries including plumbing and heating, painting and decorating as well as refrigeration and air conditioning.

TAFE QLD Brisbane region General Manager Brent Kinnane said it was really exciting to have the national competition in the Sunshine State for the first time.

“For our students to get exposure to the WorldSkills experience just across the road – there’s no better opportunity for them,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity for staff as well. We’ve got some wonderful educators who’ve been involved in WorldSkills for many years … an opportunity to be involved in their home state is really exciting for them.”
