The engineers at Ford Australia knew they had to push the Ranger Super Duty to its limits in the muddiest, most treacherous conditions imaginable.
Their mission was to develop a test that would simulate the extreme conditions a customer might face, and they came up with the mud-pack test – a challenge designed to pack on as much performance-sapping mud as possible.
“Mud is one of a truck’s greatest enemies,” Ford Australia Product Excellence and Human Factors Supervisor Rob Hugo said
“It can add significant weight, prevent airflow, and act as an insulator, causing components to heat up much quicker.”
The team took the Ranger Super Duty to the muddy depths of Ford’s You Yangs Proving Ground, a purpose-built mud hell featuring deep ruts, bog holes, and thick, sticky clay.

But they didn’t just stop at a single pass – they drove the truck through the muck day after day, intentionally allowing the mud to build up, layer by suffocating layer.
The result was a truck smothered in over 600 kilograms of packed-on mud, its components struggling to breathe under the weight.
“We packed more mud onto this vehicle during development than we ever have before,” Rob said with a grin.
The mud-pack test is a key part of Ford’s “Built Ford Tough” validation, and it’s a promise that the Ranger Super Duty can thrive in the most extreme locations.
