Carpentry Australia has been awarded a grant from the NSW Government for its CarpentHer Crew program.
The grant is part of the Women in Construction Innovation Program (WIC IIP) which has delivered about $6 million in funding to boost women participation in the trades.
“The Women in Construction Industry Innovation Program grant represents a pivotal opportunity for Carpentry Australia and our members,” Carpentry Australia CEO Jake McArthur said.
“This initiative empowers us to actively champion women entering the carpentry trade, offering vital support in connecting them with employers and apprenticeships.”
Bridging the gap
About 87 per cent of female carpenters are taking 4-6 months to secure an apprenticeship, according to the NSW Government.
The CarpentHer Crew program aims to help women in securing and finishing their apprenticeships, as well as help highlight future career opportunities and trim down wait times for apprenticeships.
About 280 women are slated to benefit from the program.
“The NSW Government is committed on improving gender equality across all sectors and encouraging women into non-traditional roles is a key focus for us,” NSW Women Minister Jodie Harrison said.
“The WIC IIP is a great way for us to partner with industry to change the culture from the ground up, boost participation and retention, and provide women with career pathways in the industry.
“The benefits that come from gender equality are not just good for women, they’re good for everyone.”
