Carpentry Australia members came together in October for Helping Hands Day to surprise someone who’s dedicated their life to helping others.
Chippies from across the country ventured to Mudgeeraba in Queensland to revamp the home of Matt Scott – an ICU nurse.
Matt – and wife Nicole (also a nurse) – dedicate each day to helping others, and Carpentry Australia felt it was time to give something back.
Not only has Matt worked diligently as an ICU nurse, he’s also donned the white beard as Santa for seven years at the Gold Coast Hospital.
Jesse Plostins from J Squared Constructions was one of many Carpentry Australia members on-hand to lend their support.
“I was super happy to be a part of that, he said.
“It’s such a great initiative for a very deserving recipient. Carpentry Australia reached out to ask if I was able to give a couple of days, and we jumped on board.”

Despite some wet weather, tradies completely re-did the exterior of the home, including new decking, stairs and doorway.
The garden was also cleaned up and refurbished, transforming Matt’s home into a well-deserved jungle bungalow.
“We had so many tradies come from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to lend a hand,” Jesse added.
“The weather wasn’t ideal, but we jumped in together and had a crack. It all came up really well.
“It had a community feel about it – just every team working around each other. Sharing tools and stuff like that – it was a good vibe.”
