BYD Australia is giving its fast-growing Shark 6 ute range a serious growth spurt, unveiling a trade-focused cab-chassis and a new range-topping performance model designed to broaden the appeal of its plug-in hybrid ute.
The expanded line-up sees the arrival of the Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis, aimed squarely at tradies and fleets, while the new Shark 6 Performance raises the stakes for towing, power and weekend adventure credentials.

Together, they join the existing award-winning Shark 6 Premium, creating a three-model range designed to tackle everything from worksite duties to family road trips.
More choice for tradies
BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the move gives customers more flexibility without losing the Shark’s core appeal.
“The BYD Shark 6 has redefined what Australians can expect from a modern ute,” Mr Collins said.
“By expanding to three distinct models, we’re giving customers more choice without compromise – whether it’s a Super Hybrid that is a capable workhorse, a family all-rounder, or made for serious towing and performance.”
For tradies, the headline addition is the Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis, priced from $55,900 plus on-road costs, bringing a more work-ready platform to the range.
Meanwhile, the flagship Shark 6 Performance, priced from $62,900 plus on-road costs, targets buyers wanting more grunt and towing muscle.
Built with tradies in mind
The biggest nod to worksite practicality comes via a new heavy-duty alloy tray, developed in partnership with Ironman and available through BYD dealerships.
Designed for tradies who actually use their ute as a ute, the tray includes eight integrated tie-down points, two lockable storage boxes, plus an optional trundle tray for extra storage.
Pricing for the tray option is expected to be confirmed in coming weeks.
More power, more tow
While every Shark 6 runs BYD’s Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) all-wheel-drive Super Hybrid system, the new range introduces a clear performance split.
The Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis and existing Premium continue with the 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid setup, producing 321kW and 650Nm, enough for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds.

But the new Performance variant cranks things up with a 2.0-litre turbocharged DM Super Hybrid powertrain, pushing outputs to 350kW and 700Nm.
That translates to a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds, while also lifting braked towing capacity to 3,500kg — up from the 2,500kg capacity offered by the Dynamic and Premium variants.
In other words, it’s a ute that wants to tow the caravan and beat the lights.
Hybrid smarts without the fuss
Under the skin, all Shark 6 models use BYD’s 29.58kWh Blade Battery, paired with front and rear electric motors and a turbocharged petrol engine.
The result is a ute that can drive like an EV around town while switching seamlessly to hybrid power for longer distances.
The system automatically cycles through three intelligent drive modes:
EV pure electric mode
Perfect for short commutes and stop-start traffic, using battery power alone with zero fuel consumption.
HEV series mode
The petrol engine acts as a generator, powering the electric motors and topping up the battery without directly driving the wheels.
HEV parallel mode
Designed for towing and highway work, blending petrol and electric power for maximum efficiency and performance.
The key point? Drivers don’t need to fiddle with settings — the system does the thinking automatically.
Comfort meets capability
Beyond the powertrain, BYD says all Shark 6 variants have been tuned to suit Australian conditions, using double-wishbone independent suspension front and rear for a balance of ride comfort and load-carrying ability.
The ute’s Cell-to-Chassis Blade Battery design also helps improve stiffness, handling and refinement while adding protection to the battery pack.
For buyers looking to cut fuel bills during the weekday commute but still haul tools or tow on weekends, BYD believes the Shark 6 line-up now offers a more complete answer.
And with one model built for the worksite and another clearly eyeing off the adventure crowd, the Shark pond just got a whole lot bigger.
