Apprentices in Western Australia can get $2000 upon completion of their training thanks to a new scheme.
The state government announced a $4.2 million investment in an Apprenticeship Completion Grant aimed at tackling the skills shortage.
WA Premier Mark McGowan said the grants will help remove more barriers for those looking to get into the trades.
“While it’s vital we encourage more people to begin apprenticeships in construction – it’s just as important they finish their qualifications,” he said.
“These one-off payments provide an incentive for up-and-coming tradies to complete their qualification, while helping to build a safer and more sustainable workforce for the future.”
The one-off payment will support about 1,900 WA apprentices completing their courses in the 2023-24 financial year.
“There has never been a better time to get into construction and, along with other initiatives like fee-free and low-cost training,” Training Minister Simone McGurk said.
“This initiative gives apprentices a financial incentive to finish what they started.
“We know that tradies who complete their training are more likely to be employed – and these grants are expected to support almost 2,000 apprentices to get jobs in construction.”
The grants will become available July 1 2023.
