Rapid advances in artificial intelligence are starting to reshape how tradies work, but rather than replacing hands-on skills, the technology is creating new demand across automotive, construction and electrical trades.
According to Apprenticeships Are Us (ARU), the shift is already visible on the ground, with businesses adapting to new tools while still relying on skilled workers to get the job done.
New tech, same need for skills
ARU General Manager Phil Cooksey said AI is changing how work gets done, but not who does it.
“For example, electricians are increasingly needed to install and maintain the power systems and infrastructure that support AI technology,” he said.
“In construction, tradies are using digital tools and AI-assisted systems for things like site measurements, planning and project management, but the actual building work still relies on skilled construction workers.”
The message is consistent across industries: technology is enhancing productivity, not replacing trade expertise.

Workshops evolving with AI
The automotive sector is seeing some of the most immediate changes, particularly in diagnostics and fault finding.
“AI diagnostic systems are now part of everyday work in many garages. They can find problems faster and more accurately, but you still need skilled mechanics who understand how vehicles work,” Cooksey said.
“These tools don’t fix the car themselves. You still need a mechanic who can interpret the information, diagnose the issue properly and carry out the repair.”
As a result, workshops are increasingly looking for technicians who can bridge the gap between traditional mechanical knowledge and modern digital systems.
A shift in skills, not a loss of jobs
Cooksey said the rise of AI is lifting expectations across the trades, rather than reducing opportunities.
“Workshops are increasingly seeking automotive technicians who can work with software-based diagnostics, sensor systems and advanced fault-finding platforms,” he said.

Because the technology is still emerging, many businesses are investing in training rather than expecting fully formed skillsets from the job market.
“Workshops know that, so they are skilling up their apprentices with the ability to work with AI tools, as well as work on the mechanical side of the vehicle,” Cooksey said.
“That means the skill level in the trade is going up, not down.”
Opportunity, not disruption
While AI continues to evolve, the underlying demand for capable, adaptable tradies remains strong.
“AI is creating more opportunities for skilled tradies across the board, not fewer,” Cooksey said.
For workshops and workers alike, the focus is shifting toward combining practical know-how with digital capability—ensuring the next generation of trades is equipped for both the tools of today and the technology of tomorrow.
